Two islands. One unforgettable journey.

Overview

Discover the history, flavors, craftsmanship, and coastline of Puerto Plata on this approximately five-hour guided excursion, with pickup and return from the Amber Cove and Taíno Bay cruise terminals.

Begin your experience at La Chocolatería Puerto Plata, an educational attraction dedicated to organic Dominican cacao. See cacao trees and pods, observe some of the machinery used during production, and learn how cacao is transformed into chocolate.

The visit also introduces the traditional way chocolate is prepared in the Dominican countryside. Discover a typical Dominican kitchen, the wooden mortar known as a *pilón*, and other tools connected to the country's rural customs. At the end of the experience, taste dark, milk, and white chocolate, as well as hot chocolate and cacao tea. The venue also features a chocolate market and chocolate bar.

Continue to Puerto Plata's historic center. Walk beneath the colorful canopy of Umbrella Street and stop for photos at Paseo de Doña Blanca, popularly known as Pink Street.

San Felipe Cathedral is only a short walk from this area. Guests will have the opportunity to view this important landmark from the outside. If the cathedral is open and conditions allow, a brief visit inside may be possible; however, interior access is not guaranteed.

The next stop is the Larimar and Amber Mine Museum. Walk through a recreated mine and learn about two of the Dominican Republic's most representative natural treasures: amber and larimar. You will also see jewelry, handicrafts, and souvenirs made with these materials.

The Don Vicente cigar shop is located in the same establishment. Depending on the artisan's availability, you may see a demonstration of traditional cigar rolling. This demonstration is not guaranteed.

Next, visit the Macorix House of Rum to learn about the history and production process of one of the Dominican Republic's best-known rum brands. The experience concludes with a tasting of six rum varieties for guests who meet the legal drinking-age requirement.

The tour also includes an exterior stop at San Felipe Fortress. Completed in 1577, this historic fortification was built to protect Puerto Plata's port and coastline. Learn about its history, take photographs of its colonial architecture, and enjoy views of the Atlantic Ocean and harbor.

To finish the excursion, travel to Playa Dorada, where you will have approximately 90 minutes to swim, walk along the shore, or relax in an included beach chair. Wi-Fi and the amenities available in the designated area will also be accessible.

At the end of the beach visit, meet your guide for the return trip to Amber Cove or Taíno Bay.

From there the bus carries you to the salt plains near Sint Willibrordus where graceful pink flamingos feed in shallow tints of brine beneath the Caribbean sky — perfect for dramatic photographs and nature-lovers alike.
